What is a Chihuahua? A Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world. The breed is named after the Mexican state with the same name, Chihuahua. It is assumed that they originated in Mexico, but there are theories that they came from the Mediterranean and China.The Chihuahua is classified by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as a toy breed. Toy dogs are small and their only function is as a companion to man. Along with the Chihuahua, there are twenty other breeds that fit into this category. Breeds with the word "toy" in their name mean they are a "scaled down version" of another dog, like: English Toy Spaniel, Toy Fox Terrier, and Toy Poodle. The Chihuahua is a true toy breed, it was "created" specifically to be a companion to man.
