Training a Chihuahua
Training a Chihuahua should be a positive experience for yourself and your chihuahua. You as the owner and "pack leader" need to also be authoritative when training a Chihuahua. Chihuahuas are very intelligent and inquisitive little dogs. Chihuahuas are very fast learners and should be easy to train. Keep in mind that since Chihuahuas are so smart, they can get bored while training. The right approach can make training a Chihuahua of any kind easy.Training a Chihuahua should be an upbeat and positive experience. Chihuahuas are stubborn by nature and do not respond well to punishment or yelling. Training a Chihuahua could take a setback if you yell at or punish your dog. Instead, let the Chihuahua know what to do and let it follow your lead. It may seem time consuming, but remember Chihuahuas learn quickly.
Training Chihuahuas should involve rewards for positive behavior. Training should be fun for both you and the Chihuahua. Chihuahuas respond very well to being rewarded with a treat, food or belly rub and they will work hard for it. Positive reinforcement is a very good tool with Chihuahuas. Training a Chihuahua should be on a regular schedule, but not too long for obedience training a Chihuahua. For potty training a Chihuahua, you must be constant. Make sure your Chihuahua knows you are trying to teach something and the dog will be more likely to respond.
When training a Chihuahua, please keep in mind they they are very small and fragile little dogs. Never choke a chihuahua with a leash, the Chihuahua tracheas can be damaged if the leash is pulled too violently. Use a harness when training a Chihuahua.

Tea Cup Chihuahua
There is nothing cuter than a tea cup chihuahua. But what exactly is a tea cup chihuahua? The teacup chihuahua is nothing more than a smaller version of the short hair or long haired chihuahua dog. Along with the term 'tea cup chihuahua', 'pocket chihuahua', 'mini chihuahua', and 'tiny toy chihuahua' are sometimes used to describe Chihuahuas that are very small, nothing more, nothing less. These terms are not officially used by the American Kennel Club, or any reputable breeders. The Tea cup Chihuahua is NOT a breed or specific types of Chihuahua, since all Chihuahuas are toy dogs. A tea cup chihuahua could be nothing more than the runt of a litter with serious health issues, or it could just be a small chihuahua that is very healthy and normal. Always be careful when selecting a dog that is classified as a teacup chihuahua, or any of the variations of the descriptions that are listed above.
When buying a dog, remember that famous quote, "let the buyer beware". It is recommended to stay away from breeders that advertise teacup chihuahuas for sale, or cheap tea cup chihuahuas. You really never know what you are going to get. If you do purchase a dog that is classified as a teacup chihuahua, make sure that you immediately get the dog checked by a competent veterinarian that knows the breed. Because the main thing you want to do is make sure that your new dog is healthy.
Besides health issues, an owner must be a little more careful with the environment that he or she brings a dog that is described as a teacup chihuahua into. Since these dogs are runts, and smaller than regular sized chihuahuas, they can be sat on, and stepped on easier. These dogs should not be around small children since they will be more prone to injury.

The Chihuahua Molera
What is the story on a the Chihuahua molera? A chihuahua molera, also known as a fontanel, is defined as a "soft spot" on the top of the head. This soft spot occurs when all of the bones in the Chihuahua's head do not fuse completely. The Chihuahua molera can vary in size and shape, occurring on the top of the head where the frontal and parietal bones come together. As stated in the Common Chihuahua Health Problems article, this is not a defect, but a characteristic of the Chihuahua breed. Many dogs are born with a molera, and live happy, normal lives.
The chihuahua molera is found in a high percentage (around 80%) of the dogs from short hair Chihuahuas, to long hair Chihuahuas and tea cup Chihuahuas. The chihuahua molera is present at birth. Sometimes it will get smaller as the Chihuahua gets older, sometimes it will remain with the Chihuahua all its life.
While the presence of a molera COULD be an indicator that there might be more serious issues at hand, like hydrocephalus, that does NOT mean that the Chihuahua has hydrocephalus. Most Chihuahuas with molera live very long and happy lives. It is always recommended that you visit a veterinarian that knows the breed very well, because unfortunately some vets mistake a molera for the very serious condition, hydrocephalus.

Common Chihuahua Health Problems
Chihuahuas, like many toy breeds have health problems. Common Chihuahua health problems include, but are not limited to: hydrocephalus (water-on-the-brain), Luxation of the patella (knee problem), collapsing trachea, and seizures. Below is a brief description of common Chihuahua health problems, for more information, Click Here!Hydrocephalus
A Chihuahua with hydrocephalus (water-on-the-brain) may have an unusually large head for its size. This is caused by swelling, due to excess fluids collecting on the Chihuahua's brain. This is a fatal condition. Other signs include frequent falling, seizures, unsteady gait, east-west eyes (the opposite of crossed eyes), and a very large molera. The Chihuahua's molera or fontanel, is considered a breed characteristic, NOT a defect. Most Chihuahuas have a molera, which is a soft spot on the top of the Chihuahua's head. This is similar to a human baby's soft spot. Chihuahuas won't outgrow it, unlike babies. The Chihuahua's molera will usually shrink as the Chihuahua matures. The Chihuahua's molera won't be a problem as it is petted and handled gently around its head. In rare cases, the molera remains very large and can be a sign of hydrocephalus.
A Chihuahua with hydrocephalus is in serious pain and will die soon, unfortunately, the only humane solution is euthanasia, or vet assisted death. For more information on Hydrocephalus in Chihuahuas, Click Here!
Luxation of the patella
A common Chihuahua health problem is luxation of the patella. This is also known as a trick knee. When it occurs, the kneecap in the rear legs slips out of its groove, which can effect the Chihuahua's mobility and even temperament. Chihuahuas that jump a lot can aggravate this problem. If your Chihuahua is one of the unlucky few whose kneecaps slip often, surgery is the solution. A Chihuahua with a mild case can live a normal life. luxation of the patella is a relatively common problem in small breeds like the Chihuahua and some large ones as well. For more information on luxation of the patella in Chihuahuas, Click Here!
Collapsing trachea
Collapsing trachea is a problem for Toy dogs of many breeds, including the Chihuahua. Chihuahuas have very small and narrow trachea, which are susceptible to collapse. The trachea is like a straw made of cartilage that carries air from the neck to the chest. When the cartilage collapses, breathing becomes difficult, like sipping soda through a flattened straw. The symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, and exhaustion. This can be treated with medication, and by reducing irritants in the air (secondhand smoke, sprays, etc). Smoking around a Chihuahua lowers the prognosis. For more information on collapsing trachea in Chihuahuas, Click Here!

What is a Chihuahua's Gait?
What is a Chihuahua's gait? A Chihuahua's gait is its quality of movement. It is given a great deal of importance in the standard of some breeds of dogs, has lesser importance in other breeds of dogs. And in some breeds, gait is not even important. The Chihuahua, being a toy dog and companion animal, has never been known for its gait. In the last couple of years though, Chihuahuas are beginning to be perceived as one that can move marvelously in shows and competitions. The first real definition of gait or movement in the Chihuahua did not appear in the American Kennel Club (AKC) standard until 1990. Until that time the statement “A graceful, alert, swift moving little dog” was the only real reference to movement in the standard. The following was added in 1990 about the Chihauhua's gait:
Gait- The Chihuahua should move swiftly with a firm, sturdy action, with good reach
in front equal to the drive from the rear. From the rear, the hocks remain parallel to
each other, and the foot fall of the rear legs follows directly behind that of the
forelegs. The legs, both front and rear, will tend to converge slightly toward a
central line of gravity as speed increases. The side view shows good, strong drive in
the rear and plenty of reach in the front, with head carried high. The topline should
remain firm and the backline level as the dog moves.

The Chihuahua's gait should be fluid, smooth and quick, but the topline and backline should remain level. If bounce is perceived in the Chihuahua's topline/backline during movement, the reach and drive of the Chihuahua are not in balance. The Chihuahua is a double tracking breed, and while the legs, both front and rear will tend to converge as speed increases, the Chihuahua should never single track or cross.
Movement is one of the best indicators of soundness, and sound healthy Chihuahuas should
be the goal of all owners and breeders. Soundness is essential in all toy dogs, including the Chihuahua. This is because their purpose is to serve as a longtime companion. My wife and I have seen Chihuahuas that were well into their teens, still moving just as soundly as they did at the age of three. I have always described the Chihuahua as “a dog that wants to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible with a minimum of effort”. The Chihuahua's head should be held high, tail up in the air, not tucked between the legs, and a saucy attitude.

There are a few conditions that can effect the Chihuahua's gait. If you notice your Chihuahua's gait is unbalanced and off, it could be a sign of Hydrocephalus, which is a serious condition in Chihuahuas and can be fatal. The other condition is not as serious, which is a common knee problem that can be treated. Please reference the Common Chihuahua Health Problems article for more information.

What do Chihuahuas Look Like?
Proportion and Size
The Chihuahua is the smallest of the registered American Kennel Club breeds. The Chihuahua weighs in at about two pounds to six pounds. No height is given in the standard, but most Chihuahuas are six-to-eight inches tall. As with many breeds, the Chihuahua body is slightly longer when measured from the point of shoulders to point of buttocks than it is tall at the withers (top of shoulder), which is called off-square. A shorter boy length is preferred in males, and a longer body length is preferred in females (female Chihuahuas need extra space to carry their puppies).
Head
The head of a Chihuahua is a distinctive apple shape, with its rounded skull but not completely round. The eyes are large and far apart. The Chihuahua breed is also known for having a soft, small hole in their heads called a molera. Moleras are common in 80-90% of Chihuahuas. The Chihuahua has large pointy ears that perk upright at a 45-degree angle when the dog is alert and flare out to the sides of the head when the dog is resting. The muzzle or snout of the Chihuahua is moderately short and slightly pointed at a right angle. A Chihuahua's teeth are arranged in a level or scissors bite. The scissors bite is ideal for the breed. If a Chihuahua's upper front teeth meet tightly outside its lower front teeth, that is a scissors bite; if its upper and lower teeth meet flush with each other when the mouth is closed, that is called a level bite. A Chihuahua's teeth are known to wear down faster if the bite is level.
Neck, topline, and body
The Chihuahua has an attractive, graceful neck carried with a slight arch that slopes gracefully into the Chihuahua's shoulders or withers. An ideal neck is a medium length, without wrinkles and folds. If the neck is too short and the head looks like it is attached to the shoulders directly,, the Chihuahua will look unbalanced. A neck that is too long will make the Chihuahua look weak.
The Chihuahua's topline is level and flows along the top of its back from the withers to where the tail meets the body. There should not be a dip in the middle or an upward/downward slope.
The Chihuahua's body should be rounded and well-sprung to house the lungs and heart. The body should not appear to be flat along the sides. and the tail moderately long and carried up in a sickle shape or as a loop that touches the back.
Coat
There are two types of Chihuahuas, smooth coat and long coat. A smooth coat Chihuahua has short fur that is close to the body. A long coat Chihuahua is the same as the smooth coat Chihuahua except it has an undercoat. The outer coat is a protective layer of fur under another layer of fur. A long coated Chihuahua's fur is about an inch to an inch and a half long. A long coated Chihuahua will also have long fur on its ears, long fur on the buttocks, long fur on the back of the legs and neck.
Color
Chihuahuas come in any color.
